What makes A4 Paper A4?

The term A4 is part of the A-series developed by the ISO 216 international paper size standards. The series begins with A0 and goes all the way to a13 THE 2AO, 4AO, AO+, A1+, and A3+. This standard was developed based on the German DIN 476 standard back, which was popular back in 1922.

Below are some characteristics of the A4 paper

As mentioned above, there are several types of paper, according to the ISO 216 international paper size standards. The following features can be used to differentiate A4 from the rest.

Dimensions

The size is the primary characteristic of A4 paper. If you want to tell if a paper is A4 or not, all you need to do is measure its sides’ size. A typical A4 paper measures 210 millimetres by 297 millimetres (width and length). These dimensions are used in most countries across the globe except North American countries. In North America, they use the Letter paper size of 216 by 279 millimeters instead of the regular A4. In other words, the A4 in North America is broader and shorter.

Since the height and width of A4 paper are not simple numbers, you may find measuring it challenging. If you take a sheet of A4 paper, cut it in the middle down the long side, and make sure that both sides are equal, you will get A5 sheets. If you do the same thing to the A5 papers, then you will get an A6 paper. On the other hand, you can also use this technique to go bigger.

For instance, if you combine two A4 sheets, you will get an A3, and if you combine two A3s, you will get an A2 paper. You can go bigger and combine two equal A2 papers to get an A1 and the same to get an A0. Note that only the width of the paper changes and not the height. A4 pieces of paper fit into C4 envelopes, and when they are folded in the middle, they can fit into a C5 envelope.

Uses

A4 paper is commonly used in a wide range of documents. However, some primary uses include magazines, letters, catalogs, and forms. In North America, it is called the Letter size paper because it is the go-to choice for letter writing. A4 is widely used for writing because of its convenient size. It is large enough to cover a lot of content but also not too large that it is stressful to handle and does not fit on your writing table or bag. However, A4 paper can also be used to print photos.

Why is it called A4?

A4 paper is typically half of A3 and a quarter of A2. The size of an A4 paper is also one-sixteenth of the A0. It is worth noting that A0 features a total area of one square metre, and it is not a perfect square. It features a width of 841 millimeters and a height of 1189 millimetres. Every other paper in the Iso 126’s series is based on the AO.
