What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defence system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It was developed from Kodokan judo in the early 20th century by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, George, and Hélio Gracie. Jiu-jitsu is pronounced “jujutsu” and means “gentle art”.

The main goal of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is to control an opponent through joint locks and chokes without the use of strikes, allowing a smaller person to defend themselves against a larger adversary. The Gracie family developed their own system of jiu-jitsu called “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu” or “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”.
