Despite getting older being a natural part of life, certain lifestyle habits can accelerate the aging process. And if we’re honest with ourselves, nobody really wants to look older than we actually are— right?
And while we can’t turn back time, we can take action to minimize the signs of aging by identifying daily habits that may be contributing to it. If you’re looking to feel and look your best, here are 3 habits you should avoid that may be adding years to your overall appearance.
Not Getting Enough Rest
Getting adequate sleep is a must when it comes to looking your best. Not only does sleep help you look younger and more rejuvenated, but it can avoid cognitive issues also. When you don’t get enough sleep your brain doesn’t have enough time to repair itself nor does your skin.
You can find yourself with dark circles, puffy eyes, and an overall dull appearance. What’s more, when you sleep your body produces collagen which helps keep your skin plump and youthful. Not to mention, you can find yourself forgetful, and even grumpy. It’s important to get between seven and eight hours of sleep every night if you hope to rejuvenate yourself.
Too Much Sun
It’s true that too much of anything—even if it’s technically “good for you”—can be detrimental to your health. Exposing yourself too much to the sun can be a real problem, particularly when it comes to aging spots and wrinkles. You should wear sunscreen every single day, even on cloudy days.
This is because even in the presence of clouds, the sun’s harmful rays can penetrate your skin, ultimately aging you. Apply an SPF 30 every day and your skin will thank you for it. You should also avoid staying for long periods in the sun if you can avoid it, and always wear a hat and protective clothing if you can. This is especially important for light skinned people who may be more susceptible to sunburn.
Poor Posture
The simple act of standing up straight can make a world of difference in your overall appearance. If you slump, you may get that aged hunched look that comes along with aging. Not to mention, poor posture can affect your overall confidence and the way that other people perceive you. When you stand tall with your shoulders rolled back you give the impression that you’re someone confident who looks after their appearance.
It’s as simple as being mindful of how you stand throughout the day, and you won’t just find a difference in your confidence and the way you’re perceived, but you’ll also find yourself with less back problems later in life by practicing proper posture.
