With technology advancing rapidly, many jobs are likely to disappear as they become automated or redundant. The idea that robots will take over jobs has been around for a long time but is there any truth to it? Some jobs are unlikely to disappear anytime soon, such as lawyers and IT systems analysts. However, there are others that could disappear within the next decade. Repetitive, low-efficiency jobs that are easy to automate are likely to be the first to go.

Croupier

Traditional croupiers were an essential part of the action at brick-and-mortar casinos. They are now being replaced by virtual live casino dealers. Some people still prefer to use cash but the demise of the cashier seems close at hand with all the self-service options already available. In bigger stores, at least, where consumers can pack and scan their own items as they shop, cashiers are unlikely to exist for long.

Many travel agents have already closed branches to focus on their online offerings. In the past, it was impossible for travelers to organize their own holidays but advances in technology have changed this. It has become very easy for travelers to use comparison websites, research their destinations, and tailor their flight and hotel searches to exact prices and date ranges. Why would they want to use a travel agent when they can do it on their own? Travel agents had some of the best jobs but they are now having to change the way they operate.

Fast food cook 

Fast-food cooks could well give way to companies using robot technology to prepare hamburgers and other fast food. They are trying to rely less and less on human workforces and with self-service options already available for customers, the cooks in the kitchen could be replaced too.

Gaining confidence may be difficult for those who realize that jobs they have worked hard at are likely to be automated. Knowing that the writing is on the wall should encourage them to prepare for a new career in the future.

Postal worker

Less mail means less work for postal workers and today, people send an email or use social media rather than sending a letter. The postal service has provided good jobs for many people over the years, but it is on the decline now. It still has to make deliveries but with the rise of drone-based deliveries etc., it is challenging to compete. Amazon may have plans to use the USPS for Sunday deliveries but this doesn’t change the fact that the career prospects for postal workers aren’t bright.
